Magazine Conventions (10/30/2019)
Hi, today I decided to look into magazine conventions. Before I analyze the conventions of other environmental magazines, I wanted to review the key vocabulary used to describe magazine covers.
Masthead- The name ans logo of the magazine
Mode of Address- How the magazine talks to the audience
House Style- A magazine's distinctive design that distinguishes it from it's competitors.
Headline- Catchy title for the main article
Cover Lines- Articles highlighted on the front page to draw readers in; AKA puffs
Banner- Strip of space on the top of a magazine cover
Strap Line- A smaller headline, printed in the banner or with the main headline
Slogan- A short, memorable phrase unique to the magazine
Anchorage- The way in which text and pictures work together to create meaning
Pugs- These are placed at the top right and left corners of the page and are known as 'ears'. Examples of content placed here are the price, logo, or a promotion.
Buzz Words- Words like "free", "exclusive", or "wow" that attract the readers attention
Incentive- An offer of a discount or a free bonus product, like a poster inside
Sweet spot- the position on the magazine where promotions and incentives are positioned
Borders- The gaps at the edge of the page
